U.S. sled hockey, a dynasty 25 years in the making, eyes historic fifth straight Paralympic gold

Before the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Paralympics, the U.S. sled hockey team wasn’t much of a threat.
Up to that point, the Americans never had claimed a medal of any color at either the Paralympics or the World Para Ice Hockey Championships. They didn't qualify for sled hockey's Paralympic debut in 1994, and four years later, they placed 6th out of seven teams on the Paralympic stage.
The country finished dead last at the 2000 World Championships, the last before the 2002 Paralympics. But, by v...

Pizza, manicures, gratitude: How speed skater Mia Manganello has found the storybook ending to her career

Before Manganello picked up speed skating at age 13, she lived in Crestview, Florida. Originally an inline skater, Manganello would spend her days rolling around the dining room of her parents’ Italian restaurant — named "Mia's" after her — in her skates, bussing tables, manning the register, and eating pizza from the kitchen. Operating a restaurant is no easy task. It requires early mornings, strict routin...

But school always has been important to her, and her age — and the wisdom and maturity that comes with it — takes some of the pressure and anxiety out o...

Casey Dawson faced a unique challenge heading into the 2025-26 Speed Skating World Cup season.
It had nothing to do with skating. In fact, as one-third of the world record-holding U.S. men’s team pursuit trio, he was eager to get back on the ice as a unit with Emery Lehman and Ethan Cepuran and replicate their overwhelming success from the previous four seasons.
But as punishment for losing his fantasy football league, which he shares with Cepuran and Lehman, Dawson was forced to carry a pink ba...

From concession stand shifts to practice, rink time keeps short track skater Clayton DeClemente grounded

Being a professional athlete is time consuming, no matter the sport. Between practices, workouts, team meetings, and traveling to competitions, athletes don’t have time for much else during the season.U.S. short track skater Clayton DeClemente takes that to a whole different level. The Olympic Oval in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he and the national team primarily train, is basically his second home.DeClemente’s regular training schedule is demanding enough: on-ice sessions from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m....
